Universal Life Insurance in Leander
This is permanent coverage where the payment can flex as your life shifts. We walk you through how the cash value, the monthly cost of insurance and your premium choices fit together. One agent handles your questions, the application and every yearly review after that.

What universal life is and who it fits
Universal life is permanent coverage. It isn't built to stop after 20 or 30 years like term life; it's meant to last your whole life. Every premium gets divided: part pays the cost of insurance and the policy fees, and what's left goes into a cash value account that earns interest.
What sets it apart from whole life is room to adjust. Within the carrier's limits, you can put in more when money is good and less when it's tight. Down the road you can also ask to raise or lower the face amount, if the carrier approves. The tradeoff: pay too little for too long and the cash value shrinks, which can cause the coverage to lapse.
It tends to fit people who want coverage that lasts and don't mind looking over the policy once a year. One example is a business owner funding a partner buyout. Another is parents who want to leave money for a child who will need support for life. If the need ends when your youngest is grown or the mortgage is gone, term life usually costs far less, and we'll say so plainly.

How we help with a universal life policy
- 01
Start with what the money is for
We talk about the purpose before we talk about carriers. The money might replace your income, pay off a loan, fund a buyout or leave a set sum to someone you name. That purpose decides the face amount.
- 02
Choosing among the versions
There is more than one kind of universal life. The guaranteed kind keeps premium and coverage fixed and builds little cash value. The indexed kind credits interest based on a market index, with a minimum and a maximum. We describe each in everyday words.
- 03
Setting the premium
We use the carrier's illustration to walk through the minimum premium and the target premium, and what each does to the policy. If you paid too little, you can see the year the coverage would lapse.
- 04
Fixed or rising death benefit
Carriers usually offer two options. One keeps the payout at the face amount. The other pays the face amount plus the cash value, so your beneficiary's check can get bigger over the years. We show which fits your goal and how it changes the premium.
- 05
Applying and staying on it
We complete the application with you, book any exam and keep after the carrier until a decision comes back. Every update comes from the same person, never a call center.
- 06
A review every year
The carrier mails a statement each year. We read it with you, hold it up against the original plan and tell you early if your payments need to change.
Questions about Universal Life Insurance?
Call(512) 456-3814When universal life may be the policy for you
Term is ending, the need is not
Your term policy expires in a few years, but people still count on your income. Universal life can take over where term stops, especially if you convert or apply while your health is good.
Your pay changes month to month
With commission, seasonal or business income, a fixed premium can be hard to meet. Flexible payments let you pay more in good months and less in slow ones.
You own a business with a partner
A buy-sell agreement needs coverage that lasts as long as the partnership. Permanent coverage means the money is there whenever a partner dies.
You want to leave a set sum
Some clients want a fixed amount for a beneficiary or for estate costs. In many cases guaranteed universal life does that for less than whole life.
An older policy that's hard to read
You bought universal life a long time ago and your statements show the cash value going down. Have it checked before the policy lapses.
How getting a universal life policy works
- 1
A first phone call
You tell us what the coverage needs to do and who depends on you. We ask about age, health and budget. No application yet.
- 2
Illustrations side by side
We pull illustrations from more than one carrier and put the guaranteed column next to the projected one. We point out the surrender charge years and how the cost of insurance climbs with age.
- 3
Apply and underwrite
You answer the health questions, and if the carrier wants one, a paramedic does a short exam at a time that works for you. Underwriting often takes several weeks. We chase the paperwork so you don't have to.
- 4
Review the offer and sign
When the offer comes back, we compare the health rating to what was quoted. If it changed, we explain why before you accept. Then you name your beneficiaries and sign.
- 5
Check-ins over the years
We read each annual statement with you and adjust payments or the face amount when your life changes.
What moves the price of universal life
Next to term life with the same coverage amount, universal life runs higher, since it is meant to stay in force for life. Compared with whole life it is often cheaper, because you decide how much cash value to build. Your quote comes down to your age, your health and the way the policy is set up.
- Age and health
- The cost of insurance is set by your age and health rating when you apply. Tobacco use, blood pressure and prescriptions all count. Applying younger usually means a better rate.
- Face amount and payout choice
- More coverage costs more. Choosing a payout that grows with the cash value costs more than keeping it level.
- How much cash value you want
- Paying near the minimum keeps the policy alive with little savings inside. Paying more builds cash value but raises what you put in each month.
- Guarantees and policy type
- A policy with a no-lapse guarantee to age 100 or beyond is priced differently than one without. Indexed designs add caps and fees that need comparing.
- Riders
- Add-ons like a waiver of premium, a child rider or a chronic illness rider each carry their own cost. We list them separately so you can decide one by one.
Universal life questions we hear
What happens if I miss a payment?
If there is enough cash value, the policy uses it to cover the monthly charges and stays in force. If the cash value runs out, the carrier sends a notice and gives you a grace period to pay. Miss that, and the policy lapses. We watch your statements so that does not sneak up on you.
Is the cash value the same as savings?
Not quite. It earns interest, and you can borrow against it or withdraw part of it. Loans and withdrawals lower the death benefit and can cause a lapse if they get too large. Cashing out in the early years usually triggers a surrender charge, so treat the cash value as support for the coverage first.
How does universal life compare to whole life?
A whole life policy locks in the payment and grows its cash value at a rate the carrier promises up front. Universal life lets you change what you pay and how much coverage you carry, and the interest it credits can rise or fall. One trades control for certainty, the other does the reverse. Our Whole Life Insurance page explains that option in more detail.
Can I switch my term policy to universal life?
Many term policies include a conversion feature that lets you move to a permanent policy without new medical questions, within a set window. We read your contract to see what your carrier allows and when that window closes.
Do I have to come to an office?
No. We do most of the work by phone, and we can meet you at your business if that is easier. We work with clients in Leander, Cedar Park, Round Rock and the towns around them.
